What Is It About There Diet That Is Different

In Japan green tea is available almost everywhere and is free with most meals.
There are 200,000 fast food restaurants in America as compared to oly 6,000 in Japan. That's 15 times more fast food restaurants per person in America.
There are 10 times more convienience stores (like 7-elevens) in Japan. The quick food is less proccessed and sort of healthy.
There are lots of smaller mom and pop restaurants and take outs in Japan that offer a wide variety of food choices.
What do both countries drink? The US is the #1 consumer of soda at 170l per person per year, while Japan rank #56 at 32l per person of soda per year.
At the fast foods and other places the size of the drinks are smaller. A lage drink in Japon is smaller than a medium drink in the US.
There are a huge amount of vending machines in Japan. The drink choices in these machines is about a 50/50 split between sweetened beverages and non sweetened beverages. In the Us the choice is between sweetened beverages and water.

The places described as “reasonably healthy” in Japan aren't necessarily places recommend as “optimally healthy”. While convenient food in America ranges from very unhealthy to unhealthy, convenient food in Japan ranges from very unhealthy to pretty healthy.
Healthier choices are just easier to make in Japan.
