Where Was The Arsenic Coming From?
If you've read any mystery novels you know arsenic is the poison of choice for these writers. But why are we finding arsenic in chicken meat?
You might expect something like that in fish because of all the crap we dump into our rivers and oceans. But chickens are land animals and chances are they are raise in a huge chicken barn and never get to see the outside.
Here is the story of how this came to light. A masters student when to the USDA 17 years ago looking for a project for his masters degree. He decided to look into why there was arsenic in our food and what he found was startling. Chicken had a level of arsenic that was three times that of other meats. His veterinary colleagues provided an answer. Chickens are fed four different types of arsenic-containing antibiotic drugs to keep them healthy and that has been going on since 1944.
The good news is that after over 70 years this practice of using arsenic in chickens was outlawed is 2016
